Biography
Paul Jarrett was educated at Downing College, Cambridge and at St Thomas' Hospital, London. He recently retired as a consultant general and vascular surgeon at Kingston Hospital NHS Trust, Surrey where he was medical director and an Honorary Consultant Surgeon to the Hammersmith Hospitals Trust.
In 1996 he was appointed Professor of Day Surgery and Acute Day Care in the Joint Faculty of Healthcare Sciences of Kingston University and St George's Hospital Medical School. He has served on the boards of a number of public and private companies, both national and international. Professor Jarrett is a member of the international committee of the Society of Ambulatory Anaesthesia (SAMBA) in the USA and was founding member of the committee of the International Association for Ambulatory Surgery and its Past President. Since its foundation he has been joint Editor-in-Chief of the international journal, Ambulatory Surgery. Professor Jarrett was the founding chairman of the British Association of Day Surgery and has been elected an Honorary Member of the Association.
After setting up the day unit at Kingston Hospital in 1978 he has advised the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Department of Health, NICARE, the Greek Government, the Humana Corporation of America, BUPA, Cigna, the W.H.O., major consultancies and hospitals in the UK, Europe, Russia, Australasia, South America, and Slovakia on day surgery and re-engineering of surgical services. He was visiting Professor of Surgery for 1999-2000 to the Department of Surgery of Kwong Who Hospital, Hong Kong. Professor Jarrett has set up the first courses in the UK to train nurses in day surgery and has started a course training nurses as surgical assistants.
